The HT801 puts one analog device onto an IP phone system. Plug an existing handset, a fax machine, a door phone or a lift phone into its FXS port and it registers as a SIP extension — so the equipment keeps working after the phone system behind it is replaced. Check the direction before ordering, because this is where most orders of this kind go wrong. **An FXS port supplies dial tone to an analog phone.** If what you need is to bring an incoming analog line from the operator into a VoIP system, that is an FXO device and a different product. FXS supplies; FXO receives. One port means one phone. If you have two analog devices, the HT802 has two FXS ports; for four, the HT814. Buying two HT801s costs more than one HT802 and takes two switch ports, so count the devices before ordering. It has a single 10/100 Ethernet port. That is not a bottleneck — the adapter is an endpoint rather than something traffic passes through — but it does mean there is no second socket to daisy-chain a PC, so allow for a spare port on the switch. T.38 fax relay is supported, with automatic fallback to G.711 pass-through. T.38 is what makes fax survive an IP network at all; even so, test one machine before committing a whole office to it.
