Frequently Asked Questions
What PoE switch should I use for WiFi access points?
For Wi-Fi 6 access points you need 802.3at (PoE+, 30W/port) at minimum. Recommended: Ubiquiti USW Pro 24 PoE (400W budget, 24 PoE+ ports, 2× 10G SFP+ uplinks), Grandstream GWN7806P (370W, 6× SFP+), or MikroTik CRS328-24P-4S+RM (500W, budget-friendly). For Wi-Fi 6E or 6-Radio APs, use 802.3bt (PoE++/90W) — the Aruba 1960-JL807A or Cisco Catalyst 9300-24U supports this.
What's the difference between managed and unmanaged switches?
Unmanaged switches are plug-and-play — no configuration, no web interface, just forward traffic. Managed switches offer VLANs (segment traffic for security), QoS (prioritise voice/video), SNMP monitoring, port mirroring, 802.1X authentication, link aggregation (LACP), Spanning Tree, and remote management. Any office with >5 users, CCTV, or IP phones should use managed switches.
Layer 2 vs Layer 3 switch — which do I need?
Layer 2 (L2) switches operate on MAC addresses and handle VLANs, STP, LACP — perfect for access-layer switching in a single subnet. Layer 3 (L3) switches add IP routing (static, RIP, OSPF, sometimes BGP) — you need L3 when you want inter-VLAN routing without a separate router, or for the core/distribution layer of a larger network. MikroTik CRS354-48G-4S+2Q+RM and Aruba Instant On 1960-JL806A are affordable L3 options.
Do you carry 10G switches?
Yes — we stock switches with 10G SFP+ uplinks from MikroTik (CRS326-24S+2Q+RM has 24 × 10G SFP+ ports, CRS312 has 8 × 10G), Ubiquiti (USW Pro Aggregation, USW Enterprise 24 PoE with 25G), Cisco Catalyst 9300 with 10G/25G/40G uplink modules, and Grandstream GWN7830/7811P. For full 10G copper (10GBASE-T), consider the Ubiquiti USW-Enterprise-24-PoE or MikroTik CRS312-4C+8XG-RM.
Can I stack Aruba Instant On switches?
Yes — Aruba Instant On 1960 series (JL806A, JL807A, JL808A) supports stacking of up to 4 switches into a single logical unit via 10G SFP+ ports, giving centralised management and cross-stack LACP. 1930 and 1830 series don't stack — they're managed individually via the Instant On cloud app.
What's the power budget I need for PoE switches?
Rule of thumb: total port budget = (Wi-Fi APs × 25W) + (IP phones × 10W) + (cameras × 15W). E.g. 12 UniFi U6 Pro APs + 20 Yealink T33G phones + 8 UniFi G4 cameras = 300 + 200 + 120 = 620W — you'd need a switch with ≥720W PoE budget (20% headroom), e.g. Ubiquiti USW-Pro-48-PoE (720W). We size PoE for you free of charge — send us your device list.
Do switches come with the SFP modules?
No — SFP+/SFP28/QSFP+ transceivers are sold separately. Common compatible modules: MikroTik S+31DLC10D (10G LR 10km), Ubiquiti UACC-OM-MM-10G-S (10G SR MMF), Cisco GLC-SX-MMD (1G SR). Check our Fiber & SFP category for compatible optics.
